Far from being a forgotten fad from the glossy music videos of the '80s, breakdancing has always been an important element of hip-hop culture, just as relevant today as the art of graffiti or DJ-ing.
B-Boy, which is a common term for a male breakdancer, attempts to celebrate the skill of breakdancing in the format of a rhythm-based action game.
Players take on the role of an upcoming B-Boy or B-Girl, and get to customise their physical appearance (as well as their fashion sense), before beginning a career in one-on-one breakdancing showdowns.
Each button on the face of the controller represents a basic form of breakdancing (the Top Rock, Six Step, Windmill and Freezes), but these can be combined with rapid directional movements to execute all sorts of complex moves. Naturally, you must perform your moves in time with the music, as well as link them together smoothly and refrain from too much needless repetition.
A "beat wheel" encircles your character's feet, rotating in time with the music to provide cues on when to press the buttons. However, the on-screen indicator doesn't always feel in sync with the beats in the music, making it frustrating at times to know which to trust.
In fact, the rhythm and timing in B-Boy is one of its main stumbling points. The complex animations are sometimes quite lengthy, so your actions tend to become queued. This means that there's a delay between the buttons you press and the actual dance moves being performed, which is off-putting.
Some moves also require quick reflexes, such as pressing a button to stop a meter rapidly filling up, which feels at odds with the rhythm-based approach.
Endgame: It's stylish and entertaining to watch, but this boy just ain't got no rhythm.
